2007 Bennys

Castle Press was awarded a Benny, the highest honor in the 2007 Premier Print Awards for the entry of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts Presentation Book. This book was designed by Roberto Gomez. The Premier Print Awards, the graphic arts industry’s largest and most prestigious worldwide printing competition recognizes outstanding achievement in print production.

Benny AwardsThe Premier Print Awards are the printing industry’s oldest and largest worldwide graphic arts competition, hosted by PIA/GATF. In its 58th year, the annual contest recognizes those responsible for the creation and production of print communications. The event promotes excellence in print communications and rewards companies and individuals who produce the very best in print media.

This year, over 5,200 entries were received from printing and graphic arts firms from around the world and judges awarded the Benny to the top entry in each category.

PIASC/GAMA Self-Promotion Awards

The Printing Industries Association, Inc. of Southern California and the Graphic Arts Management Association (PIASC/GAMA) awarded Castle Press two awards for self-promotion. These are significant distinctions in the printing industry where pride in the quality and inventiveness of these materials is highly regarded.
Castle Press won the PIASC/GAMA 2006 Self-Promotion & Marketing Competition in these categories:
  • Gold Award for a Direct Mail piece using process color.
  • Gold Award for Company Website
  • Gold Award for Company Postcards.
  • Silver Award for Company Postcards.
Self-promotion pieces are useful tools for keeping in touch with current customers while introducing printing capabilities to potential customers. A printer with the ability to produce top quality self-promotion pieces demonstrates the level of high quality work their customers can expect. Castle Press appreciates this recognition and thanks the Printing Industries Association for the awards.

Mary Helen Dawson

Sayings of Mary Helen Dawson 1918-2002

The Castle Press, Pasadena 2004

Not for sale 31pp. 2-1/4x 2-3/4 inches. Designed, typeset, and printed at the Castle Press. The text was set in digital 10-point Requiem from the Hoefler Type Foundry and combined with a larger digital script called Citadel Script from Agfa. Larger sizes of both types were used for display purposes. The book was printed in two colors by means of photo-offset lithography at the Castle Press on 70lb. Cream-white Finch Opaque Vellum paper. The binding was designed at the Castle Press and bound at A-1 Bookbinding of Los Angeles.

This slim but delightful miniature book has, in addition to Mary Helen's witty sayings, a photo of her as a young woman. I didn't know her at that young age, but I enjoyed knowing her in connection with other miniature books. She and Her Husband Glen were the force behind the miniature-book publishing boom in the latter half of the twentieth century in Southern California.

Chisato O. Dubreuil

From the Playgrounds of the Gods, the Life and Art of Bikky Sunazawa

The Castle Press, Pasadena 2004

$30. 164 pp. 8x10 inches. Designed by Betty Adair and then typeset and printed at the Castle Press. The text was set in 12-point digital Adobe Garamond on a16-point line spacing. Display type is ITC Avant Garde and ITC Stone Sans and is used by way of contrast to the Garamond type. Printing of the text and illustrations is by offset-lithography on 100lb. white Matrix Silk Cover paper and was carried out at the Castle Press. The binding was designed at the press but carried out at Bookbinders Company of Los Angeles, California.

This interesting book is a record of the art and philosophy of man native to northern Japanese Island of Hokkaido. A member of a native people called the Ainu, he as an artist refused to merely carve things for the tourist trade. Late in life Bikky Sunazawa visited the west coast of Canada, thereby expanding the influences on his avant-garde art and sculpture.

A Collection of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura Pamphlets & Ephemera

Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles, California, 2003

$150 clothbound. 211 pp. 8 1/2 x 10 7/8 inches. Designed and typeset at The Castle Press in Pasadena, California. The digital type used in the main catalogue is various sizes and weights of Adobe Garamond. For display purposes the typeface Perpetua Titling was used. The text and illustrations were printed using photo-offset at The Castle Press. The book is printed on soft-white colored Mohawk Superfine in the 80lb. weight. The special endpaper illustrations were printed on Passport Text and the 300-copy edition was bound at A-1 Bindery in Los Angeles.

This book is typical of catalogs, representing a tremendous amount of work and attention to detail. How well it is done and how accurate is beyond the casual reader. Only the expert in the field would know if the facts were correct or if it was complete enough to be of real use. However, any catalogue of a collection of old stuff needs a beginning, and for ephemera in these three counties it has begun.

French Oil Sketches

The Castle Press, Pasadena, California, 2002

NFS. 126 pp. 8 1/2 x 11 inches. Designed, typeset, and printed at The Castle Press. Part of the text is set in 10 point digital Palatino, with a line spacing of 14 points. The rest of the main text is set in 8 point digital Stone Sans, with a12 point line spacing. Digital Palatino and Stone Sans Bold in larger sizes are used for display on the title page, half titles, and as decorative initial letters. In many of these display areas the type is printed in a second color. The full color illustrations of the oil sketches were printed in by photo-offset on 100lb Brilliant White Navajo paper. The hard binding was designed at The Castle Press and bound at Roswell Bookbinding in Phoenix, Arizona. A paperback binding was done in Pasadena at Ross Bindery. A full color jacket graces the hard backed version.

These sketches were made for any of several reasons, which the various commentators make clear and provides a look into a little-known facet of the artist's world. The fact that this hardback edition of 1500 copies is not for sale leads one to believe that the edition is to be given away to patrons of the museum.
